Club and Country

The England national team matches have always felt that extra bit more significant to me. Growing up, tournament matches at World Cups and Euros were must-see events. It seemed like everyone was watching; from hardcore football fans to your Grandad who’s never seen a club game in his life. Qualifying matches at the old Wembley, with the Twin Towers looming large over the country’s top talent, were nervy affairs but the payoff was the jubilation at the win. My first experience of enjoying watching football came thanks to the BBC and ITV coverage of World Cup 1998; watching England v Tunisia at school, David Beckham’s free kick in the win over Colombia, Michael Owen’s wonder-goal against Argentina before, of course, the inevitable heartbreak as we exited on penalties. England matches were big deals and in my mind seemed a world away from the football I was going to see in person at my club side Brighton. England was Fantasy Football, Brighton the reality.

The Greatest; Bobby Moore

My first time watching England in the flesh was a friendly at White Hart Lane when the old Wembley was being redeveloped. The national team toured around the country for years as a result, and this was probably going to be the nearest South they would go. My Dad and I got tickets alongside my school friends and their parents to travel up in the summer holidays and see England under Sven Goran Eriksson play the Netherlands. We lost that day thanks to a fantastic Mark van Bommel strike. It took me seven years to get back to another England game, this time at the new Wembley. A further couple of matches here and there over the next few years passed before I decided to commit to the England team fully; joining the Supporters Travel Club, coinciding with my move from Brighton up to the capital. This enabled me to build up ‘caps’ and eligibility for away matches as well as home ones. That would eventually lead to my dream of a tournament trip. By then I was in full time employment after university and able to pay my own way and decide which games I wanted to go to. On top of my Brighton season ticket at the wonderful new American Express Community Stadium, I was becoming a regular with England. And I loved it. Below are the details and images from my England supporting days right from the beginning. It starts here!
